Started on this novel by Anthony Doerr about a French teen who became blind. Her only other family member was her father, a locksmith at the National Museum of Natural History.  He empowered her to walk from their dining room to the bathroom by means of a rope guide, aside from her cane.  He also made a scale model of their community that she studied so well such that after several hits and misses, she was able to go home from the Museum, with her father a step behind.

2) there was no public transport;
