Aside from a sensitive sense of humor, a mediator needs patience in untangling knotted relationships. S/he cannot just yank out or force a settlement. Unlike the Grandma's knot unlearned in Scouting as the wrong way, there is a step-by-step procedure toward a just and fair negotiation.
That will hopefully lead straight to a resolution, provided both sides have goodwill, too.
